Don King Announces Middleweight Championship Series By Meshak TAYLOR |
Boxing Promoter Don King is notorious for his business savvy and he did not disappoint during a recently held press conference at Howard University's Cramton Auditorium. King was on hand to announce the upcoming Middleweight Championship Series. With him were Bernard Hopkins the IBF Middleweight Champion from Philadelphia and Washington, DC's own Keith Holmes, who is the current WBC titleholder. Both will meet in a semi-final bout on April 14 in Madison Square Garden. The other D.C. native in the house was William Joppy, the reigning WBA Middleweight Champion. In his semi-final bout he meets Felix Trinidad the IBF/WBA Junior Middleweight Champion on May 12th also at Madison Square Garden. Trinidad was noticeable absent, but he was apparently previously committed to a photo shoot. The winner of each semi-final bout will meet in September at Madison Square Garden. King also indicated that there was a possibility that the semi-final losers will also fight on that card. The winner of this series will be crowned the ultimate middleweight champion will receive Sugar Ray Robinson Trophy. Tickets for the April 14 Keith Holmes vs. Bernard Hopkins fight are priced at $25-$300 and the May 12 Felix Trinidad vs. William Joppy title fight is priced form $50-$750. Both can be purchased at New York's Madison Square Garden box office or at all Ticketmaster outlets. |

And if you haven't yet heard, boxer Mike Tyson is scheduled to fight his next bout right here in Chocolate City. Scheduled for May 19, Tyson will face Nigerian David Izon. As yet to be determined in the venue for the bout. It will either be US Airways Arena in Largo, Md. or the MCI Center in D.C. |
